Abstract

This study examined geopolymer-based solidifi cation and stabilization of sodium borate waste generated from nuclear power

plants. As the sodium borate is highly soluble in water, the dehydration and dissolution characteristics were preliminarily

investigated. The wasteform containing sodium borate anhydrous (SBA) itself was shown to exhibit a poor compressive

strength after thermal circulation and immersion tests, which was below the strength criterion of 3.44 MPa. Upon the introduction

of CaO to SBA solution to improve the dissolution properties of the borate waste, the synthesized compounds were

found mainly composed of calcium borate hydrate (Ca 2 B 2 O 5
