Abstract

Passive autocatalytic recombiners (PARs) are passive safety devices that prevent hydrogen explosions in nuclear containment buildings by inducing natural air circulation through the heat generated by H₂+1/2O₂→ H₂O over Pt catalysts. In this study, commercial 0.5 wt% Pt catalysts supported on α-, θ-, and γ-Al₂O₃were compared in terms of heat-generation behavior and H₂mitigation efficiency. Although the three supports showed similar ΔT under identical conditions, H₂conversion followed the order α-Al₂O₃(97.65%) > γ-Al₂O₃(96.08%) > θ-Al₂O₃(91.50%), indicating that α-Al₂O₃is a relatively superior support. ΔT increased linearly with H₂supply and was weakly affected by pressure. Relative humidity up to 60% caused only a small ΔT decrease, whereas 80% RH resulted in an additional 23 K decrease and delayed heat generation. Furthermore, the alumina paper based-Pt module also showed promise as a low-pressure-drop PAR configuration.
