Abstract
Alumina fibers were prepared by the sol-gel process from AlCl3-Al powder-H2O solution as a starting material. The spinnability of alumina sols was determined by the dissolved content of aluminum powders and gel fibers could be obtained from viscous solutions in a composition range of Al powder/AlCl3 molar ratios of 3 to 5. Fiber drawing from the viscous solutions was possible in a high viscosity range of 350-3000p. α-Al2O3 fibers were formed by calcination of the gel fibers at 1000℃ for 2hr
