Abstract

An experimental analysis was conducted on a tubular heat exchanger to enhance the heat transfer rate using a discontinuous swirling-inducing baffle plate. This design included perforated baffle plates with rectangular air deflectors positioned at various angles. Throughout the experiment, the arrangement of the tubes remained consistent and aligned with the direction of the airflow. The tubes were exposed to a uniform heat flux on their surfaces. Each baffle plate had sixteen deflectors, all inclined at the same angle and arranged in a clockwise pattern. This configuration created a swirling motion of the air inside a circular duct containing the heated tubes, leading to increased turbulence and improved heat transfer on the surface. The spacing between the baffle plates was adjusted at different pitch ratios. The Reynolds number was carefully controlled and kept between 16,000 and 29,000. The effects of pitch ratios and inclination angles on the performance of the heat exchanger were analyzed, and the results showed that using a baffle plate with rectangular deflectors inclined at 30° and a pitch ratio of 1.2 led to an average increase of 1.29 in the thermal enhancement factor.
