Abstract

Polymer matrix composites (PMCs) have reshaped industries like aerospace and automotive with their superior strength-to-weight ratios, yet their evolution from design to degradation remains pivotal to their success. This review examines the trajectory of PMCs, synthesizing seminal and recent literature to explore their historical milestones, technological advancements, and persistent challenges. Beginning with glass fiber-reinforced polymers in the 1940s, PMCs evolved through carbon fiber integration in the mid-20th century to modern nanomaterial-enhanced and bio-based systems. Design innovations, including optimized fiber orientations and thermoplastic matrices, have paralleled advances in manufacturing, from resin transfer molding to additive manufacturing, broadening applications in structural engineering and renewable energy. However, degradation driven by moisture absorption, UV exposure, and mechanical fatigue limits PMCs longevity, with recycling posing additional hurdles. Recent developments, such as self-healing composites, signal a shift toward sustainability and durability, addressing both environmental and performance demands. This review highlights the interplay between design complexity and degradation resistance, identifying scalability and end-of-life management as critical research gaps. By charting this evolution, the paper underscores the need for eco-friendly, resilient PMCs, offering insights for future innovations that balance industrial utility with environmental stewardship.
