Spinnability and Rheological Properties of Silica Sols Prepared by the Sol-Gel Method - (Ⅱ) Effects of Alcohol and Reaction Temperature
The rheological properties of silica sols prepared from the Sol-Gel method have been investigated as a function of the alcohol contents of starting solution and reaction temperature. The spinnability of gel fibers appeared at a high viscosity range of 10-400P in all of the solutions prepared with different ethanol contents. The spinnable solutions showed Newtonian or shear thinning behaviors at the high viscosity range. The rise of the reaction temperature led to a remarkable shortening of the time needed for obtaining these spinnable solutions. But the time available for fiber drawing was shorter for the solutions with higher reaction temperatures.
